Myrtle Beach isn't known for its abundance of historic monuments and memorials, however, there are a few interesting landmarks, monuments and homes dotted around the area that are worthy of a visit. With its coastal location, Myrtle Beach boasts two significant lighthouses that overlook the Atlantic waters, while there are also a number of former plantation homes that are open for public viewing.

The historic home of American sculptress, Anna Hyatt Huntington, and her husband, Archer Milton Huntington, is open for public viewing. Situated at Huntington Beach, the National Historic Landmark resembles buildings that can be found along the Spanish Mediterranean coast, with the Moorish influence being evident in the house's architecture.

Myrtle Beach Landmarks and Monuments: Governor's Lighthouse - Light Keepers Village, Cogulna Harbor, Little River, South Carolina (SC), USA
This impressive black and white striped structure was built in 1985 as a landmark and to honor South Carolina governors. Located along the Intracoastal Waterway, the facsimile lighthouse is easy to access from highway 17. The observation tower at Governor's Lighthouse provides stunning views of the surrounding coastline.

Myrtle Beach Landmarks and Monuments: Hampton Plantation State Historic Site - 1950 Rutledge Road, McClellanville, South Carolina (SC), 29458, USA

Not far south along the coast from Myrtle Beach is Hampton Plantation, formerly a rice plantation in the 18th and 19th centuries. Built around 1750, the kitchen building sits next to the Georgian-style mansion and is surrounded by oak trees and camellia gardens. A tour of the mansion reveals interesting facts about Lowcountry rice culture as well as history from the times when the house was used as a working plantation. The grounds and nearby Wambaw Creek are also impressive.

Set in Huntington Island State Park, this historical lighthouse is a prominent black and white structure that reaches far beyond the heights of Governor's Lighthouse in Cogulna Harbor. The station was first established in 1859 and was deactivated in 1933; it has remained out of operation since. The lighthouse is open for public viewing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

Only 3 miles / 5 km south of Myrtle Beach, the Myrtle Beach State Park Pier offers park visitors a chance to enjoy fishing in picturesque surrounds. Complete with a tackle shop, the pier is a fisherman's paradise and is also a great viewing spot for the abundant birdlife that lives here.
